Me and apparently, my cat… say hi! We’re gonna tell you a quick story real quick.

So I had a student once who told me she didn’t need pronunciation practice.
She just needed to practice small talk for her new job where she would be entertaining clients, taking them out to dinner, and they really were just interested in small talk. Like about family, what you did this weekend, things like that. So I was like “Okay, yeah we can practice shooting the breeze, no problem.”

So, one day we’re doing small talk practice, like you would with clients,
and I ask her about her day.

And at one point she says, “Yeah, I have three nipples.”

And I’m like… “Could you say that again…?”

    She repeats it. Confidently.
“I have three nipples. I took them to the store and bought them some toys.”

She meant nephews. So yeah, after that we started practicing pronunciation. Because that would’ve been really awkward to explain to a real client for sure.

And that’s the thing, right? There’s nothing wrong with having an accent.
It’s part of who you are. It’s beautiful.

But being understandable is very important. We can keep our lovely accents while also making sure that we pronounce words well enough to avoid misunderstandings.

Because in the wrong situation…that could get very awkward very fast.
